I believe human beings were created with a purpose and need to live meaningful lives. In order to put meaning to business we need to have a bigger picture of why, for who, and by who do we succeed in business and life in general. Every day we wake up and go different ways and reap different results, some have proper offices from which they run their businesses and some go to different corners whence they sell their merchandise. The big question is what really determines our success?

As a Christian and African, I believe we owe our being to God and as a sustainer of our lives He has interest in all domains of our lives including our businesses. As I was reading the past few years, I came across an interesting writer who listed seven principles that are sure to SUCCEED your business, ever since then, I try to think of them every day before I go to work, and I bid you to do the same.

  1. Start working enthusiastically.
  2. Understand who you really work for.
  3. Concentrate on building your character.
  4. Care about the people you work with.
  5. Exceed what is expected of you.
  6. Expand Your Skills to SUCCEED at Work
  7. Dedicate your work and gain to be used for God’s purposes.

The whole circle of our obligation to one another is covered by the words of Christ, “Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Our next obligation is mastering what we lay our hands on as directed in Colossians “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” These are principles with which are bound up the well-being of society, of both secular and religious associations. It is these principles that give security to property and life. For all that makes confidence and co-operation possible, the world is indebted to the law of God, as given in His word, and as still traced, in lines often obscure and well-nigh obliterated, in the hearts of men. Even of those who appreciate the value of these qualities and acknowledge the Bible as their source, there are but few who trust them and depend on them every day in their daily transactions. The accounts of every business, the details of every transaction, pass the scrutiny of unseen auditors, agents of Him who never compromises with injustice, never overlooks evil, never palliates wrong. If these were the principles in hearts of just less than 50% of most of our leaders in both the public and private sector, Lesotho would be heaven to live in, and foreign investment would flourish this country.

I want to make a call to young people who are struggling with business, even those who believe they are not: our business or calling is a part of God’s great plan, and, so long as it is conducted in accordance with His will, He Himself is responsible for the results. Work hard putting God, family and relationships ahead of money, you will become a great person in society and while on others He bestows His blessings, He will not pass you by.
